Eastern is Hong Kong Island's largest kindergarten district (73 schools) and the clearest example of local-traditional and international/IB tracks running side by side. North Point, Braemar Hill and Kornhill form an international corridor — Chinese International, the French and Korean international schools, and several Montessori and Tutor Time campuses — with 14 schools (19%) on non-local curricula. On the local side, immersion schools stand out: Kiangsu with Mandarin immersion and native English teachers (parents report ~80-90% progress to Band 1 secondary), and the Victoria (VEO) group on an IB, trilingual track — though parents note preparing for local DSS/private primaries "requires outside tutoring." With 63% in the Free Scheme and 47 offering PN classes, it offers dense choice for families wanting both a local foundation and a bilingual environment.
Non-local = international / non-local curriculum. Dual-track schools appear under both tabs.
The best kindergarten is where your child thrives — not the one with the highest score.
FAQ
Which kindergartens are good in Eastern?
It depends on your pathway. For a local academic and language environment, Kiangsu (Mandarin immersion, strong Band 1 progression) and Raimondi's section (semi-linked, ~half to its affiliated primary) are most recommended; for IB/private, Victoria (VEO) is trilingual; for a top international curriculum, CIS; for a free established option, North Point Methodist. See our Eastern rankings.
In Eastern, local or international kindergarten?
It depends on your target system. For a local or bilingual foundation, Kiangsu (Mandarin immersion with native English teachers; parents report strong Band 1 secondary progression, though it is traditional and charges fees) and Raimondi's kindergarten section (semi-linked, ~50% to its affiliated primary) are well-regarded. For an IB or DSS/private route, the Victoria (VEO) group is solidly trilingual, but parents stress that under IB, preparing for local primaries "requires outside tutoring" and may not suit every child. Chinese International, the French and Korean international schools cover full international curricula.
Are there affordable, good kindergartens in Eastern?
Yes. Of 73 schools, 46 (63%) join the Free Scheme with no tuition, including established church kindergartens like North Point Methodist and Pui Lei Baptist (several rated A+/A++ by Ming Pao). Free-Scheme schools cluster around North Point, Quarry Bay and Chai Wan, a separate price world from the Braemar Hill international corridor — Free-Scheme participation is the biggest fee divide in Eastern.
How widely do fees vary in Eastern?
From free to over $150,000. The 46 Free-Scheme schools charge nothing for half-day; local private half-day runs about $38,870 to $127,790/year; international/non-local schools range from $35,930 to $151,030. International schools in North Point and Braemar Hill are pricier, while local non-profit and aided schools east of Quarry Bay are more affordable.
