Sha Tin Kindergarten Rankings 2026

It depends on your pathway. The best-known local school, non-pressured, is Immaculate Heart of Mary; for a private school feeding local aided primaries, Hong Kong (Ascot) Preschool; for an international route, ESF (Wu Kai Sha, the district's priciest) and Box Hill (Fo Tan, many to international schools, needs outside tutoring); for free A++, Caritas Sha Tin. See our Sha Tin rankings.

Both exist — it depends on your goal. For a local/traditional route, Immaculate Heart of Mary (1971) is the best-known, with a current parent calling it "not a happy school, but not pushy either — little homework"; the private Lok Kei (Royal Ascot) emphasises happy learning plus a foundation, with parents citing "an advantage for Sha Tin aided primaries." For a local-international route, consider ESF (Wu Kai Sha), the International Christian School and Box Hill (Sha Tin/Fo Tan) — though Box Hill parents warn that in its "fully English environment, Chinese is definitely not enough unless you tutor outside." Sha Tin is large enough to offer both tracks.

Yes, and they are the mainstream. Of 76 schools, 58 (76%) join the Free Scheme, several rated A++/A+ by Ming Pao — Caritas Sha Tin, Ma On Shan Ling Liang, Tung Wah Group Liu Yan Tak Memorial, Salvation Army Tin Ka Ping and others. Local private half-day runs about $27,478 to $84,000/year, a wide range giving value-conscious families ample choice.

Treat promotional wording with caution. Some parents question Pui Kiu International Kindergarten's pitch that "50% of intake can progress to its college," arguing that a low admission bar could actually raise doubts about quality. Progression to DSS/private primaries always hinges on interviews and school-based criteria, so any "fixed-percentage progression" claim should be verified against actual figures from the school rather than judged on a marketing slogan alone.

Sha Tin has 76 kindergartens — the New Territories' second-largest: 58 (76%) join the Free Scheme, 37 offer PN (nursery, age 2) classes, and 6 run non-local curricula. Covering Sha Tin town centre, Tai Wai, Fo Tan and Ma On Shan, it is built on local community schools with a degree of internationalisation.
