📚 Curriculum
The school pioneers a unique, individually tailored Chinese curriculum based on Montessori’s multi-sensory and interactive approach, and is considered one of the world’s leading Montessori dual-language programmes. Located on four campuses across Hong Kong Island, IMS is the only accredited Montessori primary school in Greater China, serving children up to 12 years from over 40 countries.
🎯 Teaching Approach
Each IMS classroom is led by a team of two, an English-speaking and a Putonghua-speaking teacher, and is carefully designed to give children opportunities to engage in meaningful learning with the proper balance of autonomy and guidance. IMS Montessori First Steps (ages 1-2) supports young toddlers on a journey of discovery and accomplishment, guided by a team of Montessori experts who provide an immersive English and Putonghua language environment for your child and support for you too. This bilingual programme is designed to support your family in ensuring the optimal development for your growing toddler. Activities in the bilingual Foundations Groups (ages 2-3) encourage toddler to explore creatively, in a cosy, language-rich and highly interactive environment – the best preparation for learning. The Casa dei Bambini programme (ages 3-6) supports children in moving towards a mastery of self and the environment. The IMS elementary programme (ages 6-12) encourages children to learn all subjects from many directions through all disciplines by taking full advantage of their developing capacity to reason. IMS graduates successfully stream into top international secondary schools in Hong Kong and around the world, with enhanced academic and social skills, and a very strong foundation in both Chinese and English. South Horizons Campus (ages 1-6), located on Hong Kong’s Ap Lei Chau Island. Nestled in a quiet residential area, our campus is surrounded by trees, an outdoor park, and a promenade along the sea. Children thrive in 6 bright, spacious classrooms for our First Steps (ages 1-2), Foundation Groups (ages 2-3), and Casa dei Bambini (ages 3-6) children. With a large play area, children’s kitchen, a library and vertical garden where our youngest children enjoy their first years in our school! The lovely environment is designed to welcome toddlers to their first Montessori experience in the Montessori First Steps environment.
🤝 Student Support
Academic Support: Second language learners are supported well in a multi-age, bilingual classroom, where they can be successful in social settings while gaining confidence in English or Chinese. Admissions after age 6 may require additional support for English language learning. IMS classrooms provide a natural language environment for the natural acquisition of language, supporting fluency in both languages. Appoint additional teaching staff / teaching assistants to support NCS students learning Chinese; create an inclusive learning environment to facilitate students' integration; the Montessori environment with dedicated teacher speaking Chinese in the classroom creates an enriched language environment for mastery of all aspects of the Chinese language, reading, writing, listening and speaking
For needs beyond ESL, IMS may require a therapist or psycho-educational evaluation to assist in the application process and determine the type of special support needed to support the individual child. In many such cases, additional support by a Montessori teacher or an assistant is required for some period of time in order to assist the child to meet academic targets
